In 2018, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found that over 5,600 fireworks-related, emergency room treated injuries occurred between June 22nd and July 22nd, with children under 19 having the highest rates of injuries. Surprisingly, 500 injuries of this level were caused by sparklers!

Today, on Flag Day…

I love this country, this community, and the people of the Susquehanna Valley deeply. That’s why when I see our flag fully opened in a stiff breeze framed against a blue sky, it stirs a wide array of emotions within. There is deep sadness when a flag is seen draped across a coffin of a soldier, or flying at half-staff when some tragedy or great loss has occurred. But there is a swelling of American pride as well, like when Evangelical Hospital unfurled a flag in the midst of essential workers doing their best under incredible duress.

Today as we remember…

Today as we remember all those men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country, I think of my father Bob McLaughlin who served in the Navy in World War II. He survived the war and seldom spoke of his service. He was wearing his uniform in the photo I have of my parents’ wedding. At his funeral a few years ago they played the Navy Hymn the memory of those mournful strains brings tears to my eyes even as I write this.
